This role ensures timely and accurate compliance with all tax regulations; manages all aspects of the tax accounting process; manages tax audits; manages international tax issues, including transfer pricing and U.S. taxes on international activity, while minimizing tax liability and mitigating tax risk. These responsibilities are accomplished by managing individual contributors, consultation with third-party consultants, and hands-on work.

The role assists senior management with developing and managing the implementation of tax strategies, keeping abreast of new developments in tax legislation, and informing management of new legislative developments and their impact on the Company. This role partners with and advises business leaders as the Company grows and enters new markets, managing tax risk while promoting business opportunities. This role develops and maintains relationships locally and globally with the parent company and subsidiaries. In addition, this role also collaborates with other tax professionals in indirect tax matters, including sales & use tax, property tax, and payroll taxes.Duties and ResponsibilitiesManagement of Income and Franchise Tax Matters

  • Manage workflow management, tax department staff supervision, consultation with third-party consultants, and original preparation
  • Manage the Federal and state income and franchise tax compliance, including understanding US Federal and state regulations, including Subpart F income (Sub-F), global intangible low-taxed income (GILTI), Foreign-derived intangible income (FDII), and Base Erosion and Anti-Abuse Tax (BEAT)
  • Calculate earnings and profits (E&P) and tested income for six foreign subsidiaries controlled by foreign corporations (CFCs)
  • Manage all aspects of the tax accounting process, including quarterly and annual review and preparation of separate and consolidated provisions of US and foreign subsidiaries under International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), including technical accounting issue research and analysis, memorandums, and footnote disclosures for financial statements
  • Reconcile tax accounts and analyze effective tax rates
  • Implement, maintain and update appropriate, accurate systems for federal and state compliance, including software, Tax Departmental policies, and procedures
  • Manage the Advanced Pricing Agreement application, reporting process, monitoring of results, and strategies for maintaining profit within the agreed-upon range
  • Complete projects for management as needed, including setting appropriate goals, establishing written plans, and monitoring project status
  • Assist in establishing appropriate responses to tax issues and requests
  • Review and ensure tax documents from foreign vendors are complete and valid
  • Ensure domestic companies are in good status with various Secretary of State officesCollaboration, Advisement, and Continuous Learning of Tax Laws
    • Build key relationships with colleagues in financial accounting to understand the transactions executed and any significant operating activities to ensure proper tax accounting treatment
    • Acquire and maintain a detailed understanding of the Brother's business and its subsidiaries and tax implications of current business and changes as they occur
    • Work closely and proactively to develop good working relationships with Finance/Accounting teams locally and globally with the parent company and subsidiaries
    • Inform management of the impact of audit adjustments in a timely manner
    • Assist in the determination of proper tax accounting treatment for various transaction
    • Assist in various base erosion and profit shifting (BEPS) issues as required by subsidiaries or the Japanese parent
    • Partner with and advise leaders throughout the organization to understand business opportunities, advise on tax implications and manage tax risk while supporting business needs
    • Keep abreast of new developments in tax legislation and regularly inform management of new legislative developments and the impact on Brother
    • Work with Sales and Use Tax colleagues in providing US indirect tax advice and planning opportunities to business units
    • Assist the Sales and Use Tax colleagues in day-to-day activities of sales and use, property tax, and unclaimed property tax compliance and manage associated audits
    • Assist Payroll Department with payroll tax issuesReview and Analyze Processes and Procedures
      • Review and analyze data to support income and franchise tax calculations
      • Review all estimated and extension payments and filings
      • Finalize and complete the resolution process for tax notices with various federal, state, and local governmental agencies
      • Manage Audits to minimize tax liability and exposures: respond to federal and state audit requests, compile information, and ascertain the impact of any audit adjustments
      • Maintain a log of audit adjustment and their impact on the financial statements
      • Assess audit findings and make any necessary changes to minimize future exposures and adjustments
      • Analyze and research issues related to global tax planning initiatives, cross-border transactions, transfer pricing, and foreign withholdingQualificationsEducation
        • Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent experience) in Tax, Accounting, or Finance
        • Master's Degree Tax, Accounting, or Finance PreferredExperienceMinimum 8 years
          • Experience working in Corporate Tax within a large US company, consolidated Federal Tax return preparation, and multi-state preparation
          • Experience with Federal and State audit exposure
          • Experience with US Consolidated tax provision under IFRSMinimum 5 years -Experience working within a Leadership/managerial role in a corporate tax departmentMinimum 2 years -Experience working Big 4 or medium-size CPA firmLicenses and CertificationsCPA - Certified Public AccountantSoftware/Technical Skills
            • US Corporate Federal and State Income Tax regulations; U.S. taxation of foreign source income (International tax)
            • MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
            • CorpTax software system
            • Knowledge of U.S. indirect taxes preferred.Other Skills/Knowledge/Abilities
