Position Description:
The Certified Medical Assistant/ Receptionist provides both clerical and clinical responsibilities in Outpatient Infusion (OPI). The clerical responsibilities include: scheduling patient appointments, receiving and processing outpatients, collecting and communicating patient demographic/insurance information, and data entry of patient services. The clinical responsibilities include: providing personal care, comfort and safety needs within Certified Medical Assistant scope of practice for patients. The Certified Medical Assistant/Receptionist works under the direct supervision of a registered nurse, performs patient care procedures consistent with Penn Medicine Princeton Health, and works collaboratively with all members of the healthcare team.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Acts as a Medical Assistant for the OPI department, including but not limited to greeting and banding patients, and answering phones promptly, taking vital signs and maintaining the comfort of all patients.
Performs routine patient care procedures, including but not limited to monitoring vital signs, collecting specimens, measuring height and weight, finger sticks with glucometer and pulse oximetry. Reports abnormal values immediately to collaborating RN staff. Communicates orders that require immediate attention, changes in patient condition, behavior or vital signs to the nurse.
Keeps charge nurse/assistant nurse manager informed of ongoing and/or unresolved issues that are in need of intervention.
Provides coverage for scheduling coordinator as needed. Works with physician offices to obtain complete, accurate, and timely, clinical and insurance information required to schedule an appointment. Scans documents received from non-Penn providers into PennChart media folder. Coordinates and schedules appointments with physician offices and patients.
Administers and records injections.

OTHER JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Scans medical records and correspondence as needed.
Adheres to infection control policy including but not limited to hand washing standards. Prepares treatment chairs for patients by cleaning chairs with appropriate agent as requested by RN.
Participates in maintenance of a safe patient care environment, including but not limited to cleanliness and orderliness of the room, restocking work areas, preparing patients for meals and clearing tray tables.
Supports customer service and performance improvement goals for the department.
Collaborates with staff both within and outside the department to enhance patient care and satisfaction.
Maintains confidentiality standards.
Participates in unit compliance as related to established standards.
Works collaboratively with all members of the health care team to ensure a smooth functioning unit.
Accountable for improving patient care through adherence to all patient safety and quality standards, regulations and best practices.
Maintains departmental supplies.
Provides orientation to volunteers and new hires as needed.
Responsible for maintaining up- to- date certifications and mandatory educational requirements; provides related documentation on a timely basis.

Minimum Requirements:
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Education:
--- High school diploma required.
--- Associates degree, coding certification preferred.

Related Work Experience:
--- Two years of medical receptionist/front desk experience required, to include knowledge of medical terminology/abbreviations and physician office operations.
--- At least two years previous RMA/CMA work experience is preferred.
--- Preferred experience with EMR system.
