Purpose: The primary focus of the Food Scientist is to play a key
role in the development of strategically significant new products
and maintenance/renovation of existing SKU's. Many of the assigned
projects will engage multiple different product platforms requiring
research into the functional composition and manufacturing
capabilities of each. Position requires highly motivated individual
with a background in scientific procedure, experimental design,
data generation & interpretation, technical writing, and effective
written and oral communication. This role requires a deep
understanding of product scientific evidence and consumer needs.
This person follows through by designing science-based nutrition
profiles for new and improved products that address consumer needs
and understands and applies consumer insights to support
development, substantiation, and review of messaging. Based in
Princeton, NJ (Hybrid work schedule), this position reports to the
Head OTC Selfcare business. Responsibilities:
- Conduct research in the development of new products for human
dietary supplements
- Develop new, improved, and line extension products within the
dietary supplement category
- Formula development and optimization with good understanding of
the nutritional composition, as well as ability to distill clinical
research to substantiate claims of formula
- Working knowledge of CMO equipment with ability to define
processing parameters needed to make these products from bench
through commercial production stages. Final execution will include
among others the definition of quality standards, manufacturing
efficiencies, packaging, stability/shelf life and distribution
requirements
- Meet or exceed quality & marketing standards for dietary
supplements such as flavor, color, texture, nutritional value,
convenience, or physical, chemical, and microbiological
composition
- Adhere to dietary supplement regulations defined by 21 CFR Part
111 to include raw material, processing, and finished goods
- The ability to manage a project from start to finish: Including
the ability to set-up and run a pilot trial through the entire
process
- Provide technical support with assigned projects including
updating master formulas, entering required batch record and
stability information, revising Label Data Sets, and product
specifications
- Learn and become fluent in all processes, procedures, and
systems used by Product Development
- Organize and multi-task to ensure projects are completed in a
timely manner
- Must have the ability to work with external vendors such as,
CMOs, consultants, material vendors and other external third
parties
- Proactive project management, identifying potential issues and
finding resolutions to help mitigate them before they happen
- Managing internal communication between departments such as
quality, regulatory, supply chain, technical services, external
manufacturing to keep track on tasks and deliverables
- Identify risk to the projects in time, escalate and facilitate
timely resolution
- Conduct meetings with internal and external stakeholders and
facilitate discussion / issue resolution
- Create project workflow documents. Examples of such documents
include: agendas, meeting summaries, project timelines, PowerPoint
presentations, & executive leadership updates, miscellaneous
- Understands and leverages scientific databases, consumer
marketing insight tools and other digital data to support decision
making. Disseminates learnings within the team
Qualifications/Skills: --- BS in Food Science, Chemistry, Biology,
Engineering or related discipline with appropriate experience is
required. MS in Nutrition preferred --- Minimum 3+ years'
experience in pharmaceutical or nutraceutical product development
--- Deep Knowledge of structure/function claim structure in
nutraceuticals --- Understanding of how different ingredients work
best in different delivery systems --- Knowledge of the effect of
herbs, vitamins and minerals on flavor profile of dietary
supplements --- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
--- Ability to work on complex projects with general direction and
minimal guidance --- Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly
and effectively with a wide variety of internal and external
people, both in formal and informal circumstances, and where
necessary, to gain their agreement and acceptance Preferred
Experience:
- Track record in commercializing supplement products in US
- Experience with both clinical and homeopathic remedies
- Experience in running clinical studies on nutraceuticals
- Preferred previous experience in designing dietary supplements
within women's health, mental health, or sleep category Must be a
U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident of U.S. or otherwise
authorized to work in the U.S. without requiring sponsorship now or
