(Senior) Director, Head of Development Operations

The Role

Genmab is searching for a Head of Development Operations to join its team! In this role, you will provide strategic oversight and operational leadership for development functions across the Global R&D Operations department. You will lead or actively contribute to continuous improvement initiatives. You will cultivate successful partnerships with our research and commercial operations teams. You may manage and develop direct reports. This influential leader will work with cross-functional and multicultural teams to drive results and organizational change leadership.

The position can be located in Denmark, Netherlands, or United States and reports to the Vice President, Head of Global R&D Operations.

Responsibilities

Strategy & Operations

  • Drive strategic and operational planning for global development operations, and translate this into high-impact activities for the organization

  • Cultivate a functional center of excellence for the department, and implement an operating model that ensures strong performance and collaboration with global business partners (e.g., research, development, commercial, and enabling functions)

  • Forge strategic partnerships and synergies across the organization to establish greater transparency and accountability for those carrying out development operational excellence objectives

  • Ensure effective, pro-active, and open communications to clearly convey operational project goals, progress, and issues

  • Develop high quality presentations for senior management reviews, leadership meetings, business updates, project presentations, and global webcasts

  • Provide a wide range of hands-on management to shepherd development operations activities and ensure smooth day-to-day operations

Process Improvement

  • Identify new process opportunities, propel continuous improvement initiatives, and partner with appropriate personnel to implement and re-evaluate cross-functional process standards

  • Form, lead, and/or coach multidisciplinary operational excellence initiative teams to deliver on agreed milestones and targets

  • Track progress of key initiatives towards defined milestones, and provide metrics/reports back to senior leadership teams to facilitate decision-making

  • Connect operations experts across the development organization to maximize efficiencies, share, and apply best practices

Governance

  • Promote meeting excellence through rigorous management of agendas/minutes, tracking decisions and follow-up, in-meeting facilitation, and timely communications

  • Chair Development Improvement Forum meetings. Serve as board secretary for Development Improvement Steering Committee meetings. Serve as member of operations leadership teams

Resource Management

  • Partner with Finance, Portfolio & Project Management, and/or Human Resources to manage annual budget and internal resources, challenge resource requests, track actual spending, forecast for budget variance, and ensure decisions are effectively communicated

People & Culture

  • Collaborate with Human Resources on talent acquisition, talent development, performance management, succession planning, employee onboarding, and culture initiatives

  • Build functional expertise in the department and ensure adequate role-specific training is provided

  • Engage and energize employees through communication of goals, priorities, and other business critical information as well as recognizing and celebrating success and achievements

Requirements

  • Advanced degree in life sciences/healthcare or business is preferred

  • Biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry experience

  • Strong knowledge of global oncology clinical drug development processes

  • 10 years' experience in a multidisciplinary environment or line function (clinical development, trial management, project management, clinical operations, operational excellence, etc.)

  • 5 years' experience with cross-functional team leadership

  • 5 years' experience with budget management, financial forecasting, and resourcing

  • People management experience, preferably in a matrix environment

  • Multisite or international experience is preferred

  • Capable of using creative yet pragmatic problem-solving approaches to cut through complexity and deliver tangible results

  • Ability to build strong stakeholder relationships, drive employee engagement, and lead indirectly to ensure connectivity across multiple functions and management levels

  • Model leadership characteristics to harness, manage, and motivate a diverse organization with global and multidisciplinary development teams

  • Strong interpersonal skills and expert team player with the ability to optimize team member contributions in a highly matrix environment

  • Excellent negotiation, conflict resolution, and facilitation skills to bridge scientific and business partners for effective international collaboration

  • Advanced project management skills, structured work approach, and capable of managing multiple deliverables with respect to prioritization and self-management

  • Highly effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to reflect key messages concisely and accurately to a variety of audiences

  • High energy, with relentless optimism in pursuit of achieving outcomes
