PPPL is seeking a Water Systems Engineer to support the engineering
operation of NSTX-U the flagship fusion experiment at PPPL. This
position requires experience, operation, and design of unique,
deionized water cooling systems. Candidates should have experience
with the design and operation of deionized water systems.
Responsibilities
This position will be expected to provide mechanical engineering
support for NSTX-U Water Systems. Will develop technical
requirements, design, fabrication, installation, testing,
operation, maintenance, and upgrades for deionized water systems
using standard engineering practices. Supports other Engineering
Department engineering duties as needed.
50%- Heating Water Systems Engineer:Provides Mechanical Engineering
and technical operations support and assistance on numerus cooling
water systems that support NSTX-U operations.
Evaluate and provide engineering direction to maintain existing
equipment including the preparation of operating and maintenance
procedures.
Evaluate and provide engineering design for the replacement
components that are no longer available.
Perform system calculations, including but not limited to the
following: system sizing, flow calculations, pressure drops, and
heat transfer as needed.
Apply knowledge of controls, instrumentation, software, hardware,
and computing systems to support operations.
Position will oversee the work of technical staff to accomplish
project goals and objectives. Activities in industrial and
laboratory situations.
Provide oversite of subcontractors ensuring performance meets
quality and contract document requirements.
Consistently apply the Laboratory's Integrated Safety Management
(ISM) program and all ES&H requirements.
Encourage others to be safety conscious and observe safety rules
including use of safety equipment.
Reviews work for environmental impact.
Compile with ES&H Directives, DOE Orders and OSHA
standards.
Provide Subject Matter Expert (SME) support for the labs Pressure
Systems Program ES-MECH-015.
20%- D-Site Shift Supervisor:Performs the following in accordance
with PPPL and NSTX-U policies, programs and procedures:
Coordinate site maintenance, upgrade, and experimental operations
activities.
Monitor conduct of operations for D-site activities.
Coordinate site-wide off-normal response with Emergency Services
and other D-Site stakeholders.
20%-Engineering Operations:When not discharging these roles above,
this position will support other PPPL engineering, maintenance, and
operations activities, including reviews for safety, design,
procedures, training, and projects to provide experimental
operations engineering and perspective as needed.
5%- Provides support for Heating Engineering Section Head duties as
required.
5%- Complete and maintain all safety and operations training.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
BS in mechanical engineering or other similarly related degree.
Minimum of six years of experience with water systems design and
operations.
Experience with deionized water systems
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Superior communication skills, both written and verbal are
essential, must be self-motivated and have a proactive approach to
solving programs.
Excellent computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office
suite
Must have excellent command of AutoCAD.
Must have the ability to read and understand P&ID's, control
strategies, and development of control schematics based upon the
documents.
Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects to meet
department needs.
Working knowledge of ASME pressure codes (e.g., ASME B31.3,
"Process Piping" and ASME PTC-25 Pressure Relief Devices.
Certificates and Licenses:
Physical Requirements:
Full hand, arm and leg mechanical dexterity and coordination.
Full or fully corrected vision, correct depth and color perception,
occasional close work, work in low light conditions.
Adequate hearing and speaking for good communication, alarm
annunciation, announcements, operations, troubleshooting,
telephonic and electronic communiqu--s and situational awareness in
a construction or industrial environment.
Working Conditions:
Standard office environment, meetings, as well as field support for
the following typical activities required to support experimental
operations:
Computer & control panel operations with full mental
concentration.
Moderate exertion, steps, and ladders.
Routinely engaged in walking, standing or sitting.
Exposure to dust, temperature excursions, humidity, low level
radiation, noise, household and industrial chemicals, solvents and
some fumes.
Working near hand tools, powered hand tools, machine shop tools and
rotating equipment.
Work will generally be day shift (2nd shift work may be required
depending on facility schedule.)
Vendor visits may be required when supporting ongoing projects
